LA - Bas
Published in Paperback by Hippocrene Books (August, 1997)
Authors: Joris-Karl Huysmans and Robert Irwin
Average review score:

LA - Bas = interesting social phenomenon...
I found this book more than engrossing, both with the protagonist as well as his research. However, more interesting to me was the general social outlook portrayed in this piece... we see a man discontent with the mass produced and the mediocre, a view on consumerism before it was called that. The book was writen in 1891 during the Industrial Revolution, and even though the factories do not even play a role in this book, you can clearly see their influence.

This book, although somewhat more introspective and more annoyingly sensationalized that is absolutely necessary, makes it abundantly clear how little we have progressed in thought in the last 100 years.

Better than the mis-translations of Keene Wallace
It's unfortunate that the 1924 Keene Wallace translation is still so popular. Here is an example of why this new translation by Brendan King is better:

Keene Wallis:

"Asphalt from the street, leaves of henbane, datura, dried nightshade, and myrrh. These are perfumes delightful to Satan, our master."

Brendan King:

"Rue, leaves of henbane and thorn-apple, dried nightshade and myrtle, all fragrances pleasing to Satan, our master."

One can only wonder how many generations of unfortunate satanists, not knowing French, suffered serious trauma from inhalation of asphalt from the streets, instead of rue, due to Keene Wallis' erroneous translation...

A dark and poetic trip into 19th century French Satanism
I re-read this book once a year and with each passage I find new moments to be enchanted, bewildered and mystified by. This book inspired me so much that I tattooed it's title on my upper right arm when I was 16.

Managerial Economics and Business Strategy (Irwin Series in Economics)
Published in Hardcover by Richard d Irwin (January, 1994)
Authors: Michael R. Baye, Richard 0. Beil, and Richard O. Beil
Average review score:

Excellent service, book in mint condition
The book I bought from Eric was in excellent condition, plus it arrived only 3 days after I had purchased it! Great service, perfect product!

Very helpful
I have never been too crazy about or never been good at economics, but after reading this book, I feel I understand the real-world economics better. For a novice like me, it is relatively easy to follow the contents because it's full of examples from real business world. I assume this book will be satisfactory to more "academic" readers too because the book still doesn't fail to cover real economic materials like graphs and theories.

Good Book
This book provides an excellent background for learning applied managerial economics. Mr. Baye uses interesting real-world examples, which is difficult when writing about the entirely hypothetical world of micro-economics. I felt that the section on Game Theory was especially useful in explaining real world market paricipant behavior in pricing decisions. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for both students of economics, as well as those non-students seeking a weekend of light reading in the topic of economics.

Microeconomics (The Irwin Series in Economics)
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Irwin (January, 1993)
Author: David C. Colander
Average review score:

its great
i also have another few books of this write and this writer is simply great to present us his ideas

MAH-velous!
David Colander's Microeconomics is possibly the best introductory book to Microeconomics. He provides practical examples, as well as allows his own personal quirks and the like to show through, thus avoiding the monotony of traditional textbooks. Also contains color illustrations to help in the understanding (and the illustrations ARE helpful!).

Excellent intro to microeconomics
This is a great text for an intro to Microeconomics (I used this book when I was student). It was written clearly by stating the points that the author hopes you learn, followed by the reading and then exercises and problems to make sure the student understood the concepts from the chapter. The many graphs in this book make the concepts easy to understand and the fact that most of the graphs are in color helps out alot.

The Spinner's Companion
Published in Spiral-bound by Interweave Press (October, 2001)
Author: Bobbie Irwin
Average review score:

a good book for those just starting their library
If you've just learned to spin, this book will enhance your library. It is very clear and complete. It explains all those terms that get thrown around.... Grist, twist, ratio... This book will help you keep it all straight.

Don't Spin Without It
I had enough money to buy one book and picked this one over the Amos Big Book of Handspinning. Its compact size is perfect for keeping in my workbasket, it is also a perfect size for "going on the road." The information is clearly presented and valuable. And...it lacks the demeaning comments of the Amos book, for those spinners that use double tredle.

Must Have!
this book is packed full of all the little things you know, but can't quite remember when you need to.. Great tips and advice fo new spinners, and all the stuff experienced spinners sometimes need to be reminded of. All information from starting with a wheel or spindle to how to make boucle yarns! Highly recommended for everyone.

The Top of the Hill
Published in Hardcover by Delacorte Press (October, 1979)
Author: Irwin Shaw
Average review score:

Enjoyable summer reading!
I read in a James Jones biography that Jones, William Styron, and Shaw (amoung others) hung-out and played poker together while living in Paris during the 60s. My, to be a fly on the wall during these times! - what a scene that must have been! But back to the book: Shaw was a straight-ahead, no frills story-teller. I reserve 5 star ratings to works that have me shuddering with some emotion or overwhemled by the author's insight. Even though the ending of this book evoked a tear, it is pot-boiler nevertheless. Good summer reading by the pool. One can find Shaw's books now only at used book stores; the big chain stores don't even carry him. In reference to the previous reviewer's comment of having 'Top of the Mountain' in a crisp hardback handy, I'll say a tattered paperback works very well. In all, a well-told story with a poignant message at the end.

One of the best books I have read
Irwin Shaw is a master! His characters are so real and the story is very interesting. I enjoyed reading the book from start to finish. Too bad that this book was not one of the bestsellers because it has so many good stories and interesting characters. I recomend it to people who have read other Irwin Shaw books. He delivers again!

Wonderful, the main character immediatley became my hero.
Irwin Shaws Top of the Hill was absolutley marvelous. Action filled, deep and loving. The main character, Michael, is my hero and role model. If there's one book to have on your shelf in a crisp hardcover, its got to be this one. I read it three times and I could still benefit from another reading.

Introduction to E-Commerce (McGraw-Hill/Irwin Series in Marketing)
Published in Hardcover by McGraw Hill College Div (April, 2003)
Authors: Jeffrey F. Rayport and Bernard J. Jaworski
Average review score:

Dazed & Confused
This text was required reading in an Internet marketing class I took. As an about-to-graduate business major, I felt the book often strayed off it's subject matter (e-commerce) and too often went into excrutiating detail about how businesses operate. Although I did not read every chapter, the sections I did read were repetitive and confusing to follow. For example, the concept of "catalog content management" is defined and discussed at least three times in one chapter. To say this book is thorough is an understatement. There are many sections that could have been deleted with no loss of meaning to the subject matter. The book is probably OK for beginning business majors who have yet to take lots of business classes. However, for those who are more familiar with business, you will probably find yourself skimming over this text looking for the information you want. If you're looking for a general overview of e-commerce, this is not the book for you. If you want more detail than you thought existed . . . well, I'm selling my copy in the used book section of this site :)

Law for Business (Irwin Legal Studies in Business Series)
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Irwin (August, 1996)
Authors: A. James Barnes, Terry Morehead Dworkin, and Eric L. Richards
Average review score:

well organized
i took this class, the cases used and presneted and done so in an informative manner, i learned a lot just by reading the text

Good overview of business law
I realize that many of you buying this book won't have a choice about it--it's probably required for a class you are taking and don't much care how good or bad the book it because you need it regardless. However, for those of you who do have a choice:

This textbook has 9 Parts (Intro to law, Contracts, Sales, Agency and Employment, Business Organizations, Property, Commerial Paper, Credit Transactions, Government Regulation) with a total of 48 chapters.

The format of the book, along with the firgures and tables, makes the book easy to read. When applicable, there is a case relating the law described to a real-world situation or a box with ethical considerations and questions. Additionally, the problems at the end of each chapter explore the issues and make students think of both sides of the arguement.

However, in certain areas when describing the law, the text can be vague. The authors could do better making it clear when and how a law is applicable. There are many times when doing the problems where I would look up the case or the issues involved online to get a complete picture.

Overall, a good textbook, especially with supplemental material to be given during lecture.

Current, Thorough, and User-Friendly
In my opinion, this is the finest business law textbook on the market. It contains well-edited cases for discussion, cogent analysis of policy and legal history, and easy-to-read flowcharts that help students go through the legal reasoning steps.

It is extremely user friendly to both the lay student and instructor. In addition to the core contract law chapters, it contains chapters summarizing all the main substantive areas of law (and even contains a chapter on the new field of Cyberlaw).

The supporting instructor materials and test bank are excellent. I highly recommend this text. It is well worth the price.

The authors are professors from the Indiana University School of Business, one of the top 5 business schools in the world.

Macroeconomics
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Irwin (August, 1901)
Authors: David C. Colander and Irwin/McGraw-Hill
Average review score:

great book for starters in economic theory ,esp for students
It's a great book for first year business students and all those who want to learn something about basic principles of macroeconomics and the influence it has on everyday business activities

A great introduction to macroeconomic theory
In comparison with other macroeconomic texts around it should get 5 stars. It starts with a historical perspective of the crisis in economics at the time of Keynes, setting the picture for why anyone bothered to invent macroeconomics in the first place. It then rapidly proceeds to introduce the major schools of macroeconomics and to develop the relevant ideas and models. It is an ideal introduction for the interested or serious student and manages to be exciting as well as fairly comprehensive. If you're taking an introductory macroeconomics course, get this book instead of your text. If you're coming from outside the economics profession and have a mind of your own, this ones for you.

Great Book - Samuelson and Nordhaus Are Awesome
This is a classic Macro text used for many Intro to Macro-Econ.

I used a similiar text (many editions before) when I took my first econ class in college over 10 yrs ago.

This is a great book, easy to understand and fluid reading.

Thumbs Up!!!

Pricing, Hedging, and Trading Exotic Options: Understand the Intricacies of Exotic Options and How to Use Them to Maximum Advantage (Irwin Library of Investment & Finance)
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Trade (December, 1999)
Authors: Israel Nelken and Izzy Nelken
Average review score:

good book for beginners in exotic options
good functional book. keeps things simple

Explains Motivation for Using Exotic Options
This book does a very nice job of both explaining how exotic options work and one's motivation for using complex derivatives. Good graphs, appropriate use of equations, and plenty of actual market-based examples.

Cogent Explanation of Exotic Options
Nelken is a clear explainer of how exotic options work. One of the key features of his work is to provoke thought about useful approaches to evaluating the products. There are no pat answers when dealing with exotics, but Nelken charts a fine road map.
